The Shoals Golf Club lies between the Wheeler and Wilson dams on the Tennessee River and boasts two of the most unique and challenging courses on the Robert Trent Jones Trail. The Fighting Joe Course is aptly named from the Wheeler Dam, which is named in honor of General Joseph "Fighting Joe" Wheeler - the only Confederate General to attain the same rank later in the United States Army.
This links-style course is simply good, straight-forward golf for players of all skill levels, but is long...really long, measuring over 8,000 yards from the back tees. With elevation change "assistance", you can see where you are going, the question is...can you get there?
The par-5 17th hole is considered the signature hole on the course, but for many, the 18th hole playing along the edge of Wilson Lake on the Tennessee River will distract you with its beauty, if not its treachery.
